A Day in Belmar
By Lina Iddisah, Vice President of Service
The Belmar beach clean-up hosted by Ocean County College was awesome! We and many other chapters from around the state addressed issue 9 of our society’s Honors Study Topic (Family, Individual, and Community Life) and Issue 10 (The Eviroment) .We were able to serve our community by picking up litter and removing debris. Garnet, Iota Xi’s own committee leader for leadership and fellowship, did a great job. He picked over45 pounds of cigarette butts, plastics, and non-biodegradable materials by himself, he was a litter collecting machine.
After the beach cleanup,we went to McClearen park for a Common Roots picnic to discuss the relationship between Community and the environment using Broken Windows Theory as a lens. There were lots of food and drinks to fill our bellies. And the hot dogs were deliciousness!!! Although we were exhausted from cleaning up the beach, we did not hesitate to further serve our community by cleaning up the park where we had the picnic. Joe was the first to initiate this act. Thank you Joe! We love you!
participating in this event and hanging out with my fellow Phi Theta Kappans was a wonderful experience. We were able to serve our community, socialize with other members, officers and alumni, and make a difference within our community, environment, and our world. Denisa our Vice President of Fund raising was able to sell our Operation Green t-shirts and tote bags, she was wonderful. You should of seen her in action! She sold over $80 worth of stuff . Our new members, Mike and Jenna, were wonderful. They braved the chilly weather with us as we joined in fellowship with our nine other sister chapters from around the state and region! It was truly a memorable event!!!
